Welcome to Otsego County

Welcome to this website which is a part of MIGenWeb and USGenWeb, a network of websites that provide free online genealogical information. This county is currently available for adoption.  For more information contact our state coordinator.     OtsegoCounty, first known as "Okkuddo" County, was created from Michilimackinac County in 1840. Three years later, the county was renamed Otsego County after Otsego County, New York.

Located in the north central Lower Peninsula, Otsego County is truly a four season playground. Such sports as fishing, hunting, golfing, and the winter sports: down-hill and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling all combine to make Otsego County a great place any time of the year. It is located on the 45th parallel, half way between the Equator and North Pole. Gaylord is the county seat.

There are five towns (with post offices) within its boundaries: Elmira, Gaylord, Johannesburg, Vanderbilt, and Waters. Otsego County is comprised of nine townships: Bagley, Charlton, Chester, Corwith, Dover, Elmira, Hayes, Livingston, and Otsego Lake.
